In June, the Electronic Entertainment Exposition showed off Microsoft and Sony’s new game consoles for gamers everywhere who have been eagerly anticipating the return of both brands.  Eight years have passed since Microsoft’s last game console (the Xbox 360) hit store shelves and seven years since Sony released their machine (the PlayStation 3).

Microsoft’s newest console, the Xbox One, is set for release this November and comes packed with not only the machine but also a Kinect sensor as well. The Kinect is like a large webcam that can be used to talk to loved ones who may be far away using Skype, but unlike a webcam you can also use it to play games and to get fit. Microsoft says the Kinect can follow your movements and replicate that movement on screen in real time.  It can also see you in the dark and even track your heartbeat.

The Xbox One is not only focusing on games, it is also putting a strong emphasis on TV. You will now be able to watch your favorite TV shows through Xbox One … like the new Halo program being produced by the critically acclaimed director Steven Spielberg. Halo is one of Microsoft’s biggest selling game franchises that sees you take on the role of a space commander battling aliens in the distant future. And now you will not just be able to play in that universe, you will be able to see actors bring those characters to life as well. The Xbox will also allow you to easily switch between playing games, watching TV and surfing the Internet at any time. This November, it will have a price tag of $499.99.

If you are looking for something a little less heavy on the TV side of things and a lot less heavy on the price tag, then the PlayStation 4 may just be your way to play. Representatives for Sony are calling it “the gamer’s console,” it will have 20 exclusives games in its first year alone, which will make for a lot of gaming that you will be unable to find anywhere else. The graphical capability of the PlayStation suggests that it will be equal to some of the current gaming computers that are on the market, and will be able to handle some amazing games. Actors like Troy Baker are not only voicing the characters on the PlayStation, they are also wearing motion capture suits that allow them to perform actions and facial animation. The new controller has a touch pad that allows you to quickly scroll through menus in a very unique way, and has a share button that lets you save some of your favorite gaming moments and upload them to the Internet. You will also be able to play PlayStation 4 games on Sony’s handheld machine the PS Vita, adding a whole new way to play. It’s set to be released sometime during the winter holiday season and is priced at $399.99.

Both consoles have the ability to play Blu Ray (high resolution video) and DVD movies, and it will let you play, talk to friends and family members via the Internet, no matter where in the world they are. This holiday season gamers will not only be looking forward to seeing their family but also to being able to game with them as well.
