Begin Again is something that Brooklyn District Attorney, Ken Thompson recently initiated. Begin Again allows individuals an opportunity to straighten out low level summons and/or warrants. Individuals will speak with a legal aid lawyer and get counseling. Legal aid lawyers will run a background check on the individual, which will check their entire record (this includes warrants and summons). If appropriate the individual will go before a judge to get any warrants related to low level summons removed from their record.
Low level summons such as; consumption of alcohol in public, unlawful possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct, riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, littering, loitering, being in the park after closing, trespass, unleashed dog, spitting, making unreasonable noise are just some of the summons that Begin Again can help with. The Begin Again event will be on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at St. Paul Community Baptist Church at 818 Schenck Avenue from 9am to 3pm.
The first Begin Again event was held in June 2015, and was attended by over 1,000 people. This event was able to resolve close to 700 warrants according to stats from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office.
