From The Aisle Avengers: Age of Ultron Connects the Dots

Avengers

Earth’s mightiest heroes have reunited in what has become the second largest domestic cinematic opening weekend of all time, earning an estimated $191.3 million, according to Box Office records.

By now you have heard people say The Avengers: Age of Ultron is a big film, well it really is. With a star studded cast, huge budget and its larger than life action scenes and sets, it’s kind of hard to disappoint. The movie begins right where the Avengers left off, dealing with the ramifications of Loki’s failed alien invasion. His scepter, which was used to control the minds of various Shield agents and even one of the Avengers, Hawkeye, is now in the hands of Hydra and genetically enhanced individuals (Scarlett Witch and Quick Silver).

All of the aliens, genetically enhanced people and secret terrorist groups in this film (and the ones prior) embedded fear within Tony Stark (Iron Man). He saw the death and destruction that earth and his friends would face, and he decided to create a force to protect people if he or his friends ever died. However, his paranoia and love for meddling with things became his and the downfall of the Avengers by creating Ultron.

 It’s All Connected

The Avengers is unlike any other sequel because it’s connected to about 11 other Marvel Universe films and the television shows Agents of Shield, haven’t seen any of them, you might be at a loss trying to understand the how and why of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Let me briefly explain some of the background so that you can have a basic understanding of this latest installation and how their connection leads to future Marvel movies.

There are several phases of the Marvel Universe. The first phase introduced our heroes: Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, and the many agents of Shield. It also introduced our villains: Hydra, Loki and Thanos. Each of these heroes and villains faced each other in the epic battle of New York in the first Avengers film.

The second phase connects each film with powerful artifacts, also known as the infinity stones (there are six).

  • In the first Avengers film, hidden within the tesserect (the tool Loki tried to use to open a portal between Earth and an alien realm) is the space stone. And within Loki’s scepter, which he used to control the minds of Shield agents, is the mind stone.
  • In Thor: The Dark World, our hero’s love, Jane Foster, stumbles upon a powerful substance called the Aether, within it is the reality stone.
  • In Guardians of the Galaxy we meet new characters and are reunited with the villain Thanos, who tries to obtain the power stone (which is hidden within an orb).
  • Finally, in The Avengers: Age of Ultron the team of heroes learns about the stones, but they are concentrating on defeating Ultron and his two enhanced lackeys: Scarlett Witch and Quick Silver.

At the end, it is subtly revealed that Thanos has been secretly hunting each of these stones to place within the infinity gauntlet, a tool that will make him the most powerful being in the whole universe. Have no fear; I have not spoiled the film by telling you about Thanos’ brief appearance. If you have seen all of these installments you know that everything has been leading up to that moment.

 Unraveling the Future Marvel Universe

The third phase of Marvel will bring in another Captain America, Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy films, as well introducing new movies like Doctor Strange, Black Panther, a Spider-Man Marvel Spinoff, Captain Marvel and Inhumans.

Each of these movies will tie into what might just be the final Avengers film—Avengers: The Infinity Wars.
