Fun During Midwinter Recess

While most children spent their midwinter recess engaging in social media, and resting at home, students in the Spring Creek After School Program and Teen Central boarded buses headed for fun and adventure. On February 19th, thirty students ranging from kindergarten to third grade stepped on to the bus at 8:30 am headed to Legoland in Yonkers, New York. Four parents accompanied their children at Legoland, along with five staff members. “Legoland was selected based on high interest of my students. They are fascinated in constructing and erecting buildings with Lego Blocks and this activity allows them to continue to connect with our STEM focus,” said Jeremy Williams, Spring Creek After School Director.

At Legoland, the students participated in a Spinning Top Workshop. This motivated the children and allowed them to tap into their creative instincts. Additionally, the children enjoyed the Kingdom Quest laser ride and the Merlin’s Apprentice ride at Legoland along with the 4D cinema. The day would not be complete without lunch; children happily had sandwiches and juice and were ready to get back to the Legos.

While the youngsters went to Legoland, fourteen fourth and fifth graders, along with members of Teen Central headed out for their own enjoyment accompanied by two staff members. They couldn’t wait to get on the bus at 10:30 am to go to Fun Fusion in New Rochelle, New York. Fun Fusion is an Indoor Amusement Park which has a host of activities for everyone from Laser Tag, to Bumper Cars, an arcade, and everyone can have fun bowling. “Fun Fusion was more of a creative/fun based trip. The children were able to play Laser Tag & go bowling. Both of these exercises established team building and working together,” said Williams.

The students really enjoyed the Laser Tag experience at Fun Fusion. Many of them were familiar with Laser Tag, so there was a great level of excitement for this activity. Moyo Gardener, a fourth grader said, “Fun Fusion was so cool. I almost missed it because I overslept. But I am glad that I made it. I had a good time with my friends. I really enjoyed the bowling and the food especially the pizza.”

Fourth grader, David Ortiz said, “I liked playing the arcade games with my friends. I wish we could have stayed all day!” “Fun Fusion

was awesome! I enjoyed the bump-er cars and laser tag,” said Brian Fenty
Will the students return to these fun places? “If the students are interested in going to Legoland and Fun Fusion again, then we will look into returning. We try to find new and interesting places each year for the participants of our program,” said Williams.
