Last year was a fairly strong time for video game releases with several AAA titles, such as God of War and Spider-Man receiving massive amounts of critical acclaim and advertising. With so many block-buster gaming hits, it becomes easy to ignore some of the more unique games out there to play. Here are some of the games in 2018 you might have missed:
Game: Darksiders 3
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows
Rating: M for Mature
Darksiders 3 was released on November 27th, but the game didn’t have a wide breath of reach to players because it came out around the same times as Fallout 76 (November 14th) and a week and a half before Super Smash Bros Ultimate. In the gaming world, timing is everything because these items can cost up to $59.99 per game. Despite bad release timing, Darksiders 3 stands uniquely amongst the previous versions. This game now focuses on Fury and her quest to destroy the Seven Deadly Sins, a group of monsters devastating the land. The combat is made with a tighter focus on rushing down single targets instead of the previous games’ focus on crowd control. Additionally, the levels are now much more open-ended allowing bosses to be approached in any way that the player chooses. Though it’s not as polished as the first two games, Darksiders 3 is still worth your time and money.
Game: Guacamelee 2
Platform: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows
Rating: E for Everyone 10+
Stealthily releasing on August 21st, Guacamelee 2 is an amazing sequel to the 2013 original. The game tells of a luchador named Juan who must battle through multiple universes in order to stabilize his own. The game is unabashed in its deep appreciation for Mexican folklore and it uses this aesthetic to create one of the most visually distinct games to have been released this decade. As a luchador, you fight hordes of monsters using a mix of wrestling moves and special abilities acquired throughout the game. The game also uses these abilities in numerous platforming challenges that’ll challenge even the most advanced players. With hilarious dialogue, memorable characters and a ridiculous story, Guacamelee 2 is one of the most noteworthy Metroidvanias released this year.
Game: The World Ends With You: Final Remix
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Rating: T for Teen
As a remaster of the DS classic, The World Ends With You: Final Remix stands as one of the most original JRPGs ever made. The game revolves around Neku and a band of teenagers who are forced to participate in the Reapers Game or face erasure. The remastered version on the Nintendo Switch improves on the game’s stylized visuals and has hours of additional content that makes the game a safe buy for both newcomers and people who have played the original. The story behind this game serves to make every character memorable with them evolving as the events of the game transpire. The game revolves around balancing the use of two characters and their individual ways of destroying Noise, the game’s main enemies which are creatures that are amalgamations of graffiti paintings and ferocious animals. Though the Switch version isn’t perfect due to the controls being difficult to use in docked mode, The World Ends With You: Final Remix is still a phenomenal title to add to your Switch library.
Game: Yoku’s Island Express
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows
Rating: E for Everyone 10+
Yoku’s Island Express has a premise that is so bizarre that it just works. You play as a dung beetle named Yoku who delivers mail to the island of Mokumana. Instead of traditional jumping, the player’s traverse the game via pin-ball paddles that send you to different places depending on which one is used. The game exudes charm with its bright visuals and delightfully. strange creature designs. If you’re ever feeling down and want to experience something that isn’t like anything you’ve ever played before, Yoku’s Island Express may be just the game for you.
Hopefully, one of these games have peaked your interest. It’s always important to acknowledge that there are always games that are overshadowed by big budget releases. Many of these suggestions are not perfect, but they are unique and fun to play. Hopefully, we’ll continue to get more inventive and creative gaming options like this for years to come.
