Gaming Gifts for the Holidays

By Dean Moses
The newest generation of video game consoles has only been upon us for just over a month now, still we have already had a solid lineup of titles grace our shiny new machines. If you were lucky enough to snag PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, then you may be looking for the perfect game to complement it this holiday season. We are here to help with this list of 8th generation games that will make great gifts for all members of the family.

Game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Google Stadia, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows
Rating: M for Mature
Cost: $59.99

What could be better than taking on the role of a Viking invader, exploring and pillaging the English countryside? The answer is not much. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is currently one of the best games, regardless of your gaming system of choice. An enjoyable battle system, solid stealth mechanics, a vast, upgradable skill try, and a lush open world creates the perfect storm for an entertaining joyride, especially when it is all running in 4K.

Game: Devil May Cry 5
Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows
Rating: M for Mature
Cost: $39.99

This hack and slash adventure first arrived on the last generation of gaming systems, but it did not look as good as it does now. Dante and his fellow ragtag group of playable characters take on monstrous demons in truly stunning 4K visuals. From the cutscenes to super-fast gameplay, the visuals will leave your jaw on the floor. Unless you are a die-hard fan of the series, which dates back to the PS2, you will find yourself somewhat lost in the story. But this game is less about the convoluted narrative and more about the stylish, combo filled action.

Game: Spiderman: Miles Morales
Platform: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Rating: T for teens
Cost: $49.99

This title is perfect for the holiday season thanks to its winter setting. Playing as a new superhero, players are afforded the ability to explore a festively decorated New York City. This seasonal theme really helps make the experience feel different to its predecessor, even though the game world’s layout is nearly identical in every other aspect. The only downside here is the short narrative, but hours of fun can be had swinging through the city fighting carjackers, gang members, and even catnapers.

Game: Immortals Fenyx Rising
Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Microsofty Windows, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia.
Rating: T for Teens
Cost: $59.99

Immortals Fenyx Rising could make a great gift for teens in the family. This vibrant adventure brings serious Legend of Zelda vibes to the table, while also carving its own path thanks to its narrative roots dug deep in Greek Mythology. Here players can find a balance between fun action and engaging puzzle solving. It will catch the eye of fans of myths like Medusa and Achilles, which are also included in the game.

Game: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows
Rating: M for Mature
Cost: $59.99

What dad in the family wouldn’t want Call of Duty in his stocking? Players have fought in World War II and even in space, now the famed war franchise takes on the Cold War. Developers Treyarch and Raven Software keep plenty of the heart-pounding action in the series that it has become known for while also supplementing it with plenty of stealth sections this time around. As always online multiplayer also comes bundled into this package, keeping first-person-shooter fans busy for months to come.
