Hitting the Runway for New York Fashion Week

NYFW 02By Amanda Moses

A flurry of flashing lights, various clothing designs and colorful fabrics hit the runway during New York Fashion Week from September 7th to the 13th. Although this semi-annual series (it’s also held in February) has ended, the trends will have an impact on the styles to come this year.

Sheer tops, metallic fabrics and colorful sequence are some of the glamorous flairs for all to wear during the cool autumn weather. Tom Ford’s glitzy designs hit the runway featuring short, layered sequence fabrics in warm autumn tones like grey and midnight blue. In addition to sequence, Ford also featured metallic sleeves, almost chainmail like, sewn to a millennial pink (a new shade that is said to be big in 2018) satin, wrapped gown. Carolina Herrera also followed suit during her runway show, which featured a metallic, ankle length dress with puffed sleeves. Shining bright like a disco ball, Herrera’s dress is sure to turn heads this fall.

Bright colored leather outfits, rubber fabrics and elbow length gloves are the futuristic winter styles to wear. Calvin Klein and Tom Ford both showcased models wearing sunset orange apparel, from a tight pencil skirt to a leather trench in the same shade during their respective collections displayed at New York Fashion Week. Designer Sies Marjan took a different approach by using metallic and suede sunset orange, golden tones in their pants suit designs.

Springtime means donning bright, colorful dresses, and Fashion Week has determined that many of these should feature a square neckline. Whether you are wearing a flowery chiffon dress with dozens of ruffles and puffed sleeves (another future fashion trend) like Rodarte’s sheer delicate ensemble or preparing for spring showers with Calvin Klein’s silk, long sleeved dress with ink blots and complemented with rubber-red cowgirl rain boots, remember that a square neckline is a flattering style for all body types.

Fashion Week’s designers dictated that this summer there will be a resurgence of plain white tank tops. Some stylists from Elizabeth and James complemented this tank top with a baggy bottom piece, such as a loose fitting, ankle length skirt, while The Row paired it with baggy mustard colored trousers and Calvin Klein dressed the basic tee with an acid wash leather skirt (acid washed leather pants, shirts and coats were a big trend during Klein’s show).

Overall, New York’s Fashion Week is one of the many infamous shows when international fashion collections are shown to prospective buyers, the press for what styles are to come spring 2018 and the general public to admire the designers’ artistic vision.
