On September 26th, JASA Starrett Senior Center kicked off the Jewish New Year with their annual Rosh Hashanah party in the lower level of the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC). This celebration is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days and is observed with praying, personal reflection, and other traditions. JASA honors this special holiday with a delicious lunch, including Challah, honey, apples, and other scrumptiously sweet deserts.
Once lunchtime commenced, the entire cafeteria in the lower level of the BSC was bustling with seniors as they ate, laughed, and socialized. Once everyone finished, JASA Director Anjelika Blyakher, ushered the seniors into the BSC’s Aspen room for music by DJ Mike Minsky.
The energetic tunes enticed many of the attendees to step onto the dance floor and boogie with their friends. Some seniors put their hands in the air without a care in the world, shaking their hips and laughing. Longtime member, Yakov Ryaboy partnered with a JASA cafeteria volunteer and per-formed smooth moves worthy of the television show, Dancing with the Stars. Everyone was laughing as the pair mimicked the tango, ex-ecuting spins and other wild hand movements comically.
In addition to the Rosh Hashanah festivities, JASA also celebrated members who were born in July, August, and September. These seniors were applauded and given goodie bags filled with chocolate.
This fun-filled event reinforced the importance of participating in physical activities, such as dancing and socializing.
L’Shana Tova to all who celebrate Rosh Hashanah!
Other upcoming Jewish holidays in October are: Yom Kippur (October 9), Sukkot (October 20), and Simchat Torah (October 22).
