JASA’s Quarterly Birthday Bash

BY AMANDA MOSES

On September 27th, JASA Starrett Senior Center hosted their quarterly birthday party in the lower level of the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC) to celebrate the wonderful lives of their members born in July, August, and September. Every few months, JASA Director Angela Blyakher hosts a party to honor the lives of seniors living in the Spring Creek Towers’ community. She believes that these frequent celebrations uplift morale and provide older adults with the opportunity to share stories about themselves, socialize with friends, and dance.
For September’s fiesta, Blyakher hired entertainers, Linda (a singer) and Wally (a pianist) to perform a wide array of live music. Some seniors formed dance circles, holding each other’s hands and swaying to the beats, while others simply shimmied in their seats. Whether a JASA member needed to use a walker or suffers from chronic aches, all signs of age were nowhere to be found at the party. The ambiance was joyful and bright, just like the faces of every-one in attendance.

In addition to commemorating the birth of JASA’s members, Blyakher also acknowledged the Fishman’s 60 year wedding anniversary with a bottle of champagne. Upon the announcement of their anniversary, the couple smiled shyly, lovingly stared into each other’s eyes and shared a waltz to a romantic song.

At the end of the party, birthday celebrants were given goodie bags and all attendees were able to enjoy delectable sweets at a Venetian dessert table.
