Message from Principal Kevin Caifa

Caifa912P.S. 346 on the Move

The new school year has gotten off to a good start and we are looking forward to a great 2014-2015. Last spring the Chancellor’s Office recognized P.S. 346 as a Model School and we look to build on that success in 4 key areas:

•What’s New: We are excited to announce that we will be addng a 5th Pre-kindergarten class this September. Seats are limited but still available for pre-k students. We are also proud to announce that we received a Horizon grant and will open our first 8:1:1 class for students with autism.

•Parent Involvement: We all recognize that our parents play a vital role in student success. There are plans for several workshops and events that will allow all our parents and guardians to become actively involved in many areas of our school including our Multicultural Celebration, Pajama Reading Night, and Movie Night. This September we will have our Open House/Curriculum Night (September 16th), Dads take your child to school (also September 16th) and PTA Meeting (September 23rd). We strongly encourage all members of the P.S. 346 family to get involved.

•Academics: Our school continues to build and grow in the areas of ELA and Math. Last year our students made great strides in literacy; in particular in reading comprehension. We have developed plans this year that are aimed to address all the needs of all of our students. In Science this year, students will be able to again work in our new indoor eBay Aquaponic/Hydroponic garden, which was created with funding from a generous grant secured by the Spring Creek Recreational Fund, and awarded by the eBay Foundation Corporate Advised Fund (SCRF). And they will continue to participate in the outdoors Urban Classroom Garden created by SCRF in 2012. We are happy our children will experience these enriched hands on learning activities, and will grow food for the community at the same time.

•Clubs and Social Activities: In addition to our Drama, Art, and Physical Education classes we have added 2 programs to our student schedules: Music (orchestra), and Dance. We will also continue our P.S. 346 Band and Orchestra, Swimming (4th grade), Mighty Milers (Road Runners club), Performing Arts, Lego Club, Book Clubs, and several student trips for all grades.

These are just a sample of the plans and ideas we have for this school year. We hope that through a strong commitment that incorporates every member of the Spring Creek Towers school community this will be our best year yet!

P.S. 346 and Innovative Programming

In my Principal’s Message that appeared in the Spring Creek Sun on August 29, I did not mention that our students will be participating in two distinctive and innovative garden/horticultural activities … indoors, the eBay Aquaponic/Hydroponic Garden and outdoors, the Urban Classroom Garden. They are natural science education programs created and supported by the Spring Creek Recreational Fund (SCRF) that students at P.S. 346 are learning from and enjoying.
