Super Mario Party for the Nintendo Switch was released all the way back in October 2018. As we all know, quite a lot has happened in the world since then, but incredibly this Nintendo gem has now been given a free update all these years later, allowing it to truly sparkle.

A Worldwide Party

While Super Mario Party was heralded upon its release for being an enjoyable experience, it was also critiqued—and rightly so—for not incorporating a competent online multiplayer mode. Sure, it had the ability to play a handful of mini games over the internet (about 10 mini games), but there was no way of taking on friends and family in the boardgame mode, which is the only reason many would consider making the purchase to begin with. However, as of the spring of 2021 players can now play the boardgame mode online thanks to a new update.

Some will wonder why it took so long, others will complain it is too late, but for most of us we will just be thankful it is finally here. If you have been living under a Thwomp for the past two decades and don’t know what Super Mario Party is don’t worry, it is a simple but rather brilliant concept. Players select from a motley cast of characters from the Mushroom Kingdom and then pick a board. Like monopoly players roll the  dice—virtually of course—and circle a board rife with traps, bonuses, surprises, and more as they journey in search of stars. After all, four participants move, they engage in a mini game. Whoever finishes the game with the most amount of stars wins.

Playing this kind of game alone can pass the time, but what is a party without friends? Taking things online feels like night and day, taking each other’s coins, racing for the stars, and battling it out in mini games strengthens bonds and sometimes even causes arguments, still it is all part of the fun. With the Nintendo Switch’s motion controls, playing tennis, shooting water guns, blanching on barrels, climbing poles, and much more alongside your pals is made even more joyous. Just beware you will need a detachable joy con to play.

If you have some friends, you have always wanted to play Super Mario Party with, now is the time. Even if you don’t have three others to engage in the fun, other spots can be taken up by the A.I. With all of this added online, this feels like a new game.
