Reducing the Fear of Falling

Brooklyn-20150624-00255Spring Creek Senior Partners Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) Supportive Services Programs partnered with the Visiting Nurse Service of NY (VNS-NY) to offer a program called “A Matter of Balance.” This award winning (which won both the Healthcare and Aging Award and Innovations and Achievements Award in 2006), evidence-based program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls.
The National Council on Aging reports that “Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs. However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through practical lifestyle adjustments, evidence-based falls prevention programs, and community partnerships, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.”
The seniors who participated in the eight, two-hour sessions were very enthusiastic about the information and strategies that they learned and those who completed the program received a certificate at the last session which was held on June 23rd. The program will be repeated again in the fall and spring at Spring Creek Senior Partners.
