Spring Into Gaming

By Dean Moses

The world of video games has both wet and dry periods, times of the year when new releases flood the market and others when the well dries, leaving us with nothing new to play for a seemingly endless stretch. So, before the summer drought, let’s take a look at some of the most exciting upcoming releases readers should keep an eye on.

Game: Mortal Kombat 11

Platform: Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Rating: M for Mature

Cost: $59.99

Release Date: April 23, 2019

One of, if not the most, recognizable fighting games of all time. This long-running franchise is gearing up for its newest sequel on April 23rd. This latest installment will include even more intense action and visceral gore while refining its beloved mechanics. Many fan favorite fighters will return, albeit a little bit different in this version seeing WWE wrestler and former UFC fighter, Ronda Rousey, as Sonya Blade. More moves, more blood, what’s not to like?

Game: Team Sonic Racing

Platform: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Rating: E for Everyone

Cost: $39.99

Release Date: May 21, 2019

Vastly contrasting in tone to Mortal Kombat, this family friendly kart racer allows gamers to pick from an extensive list of Sonic characters. From Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to the villains Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic, this spin-off title pits players in furious Mario Kart-esque races filled with weapons that can be used to slow other competitors down or send them to the back of the pack. Sonic may not have the best track record as of late; however, Team Sonic Racing promises to put the franchise back on track when it hits shelves on May 21st.

Game: Days Gone

Platform: PlayStation 4

Rating: M for Mature

Cost: $59.99

Release Date: April 26, 2019

This PlayStation exclusive is set in a vast open world inhabited by the living dead. That’s right, another zombie outing. Although, like the critically acclaimed The Last of Us, Days Gone looks like it could revitalize this genre. Players take the role of Deacon St. John, a hunter traversing the landscape on his motorcycle. Aside from boosting awe-inspiring visuals and an incredible number of zombies on screen at once, this new IP also looks to provide an intriguing and thought-provoking narrative that is certain to move us. Days Gone arrives on April 26th.

Game: CupHead

Platform: Nintendo Switch Release

Rating: E for Everyone

Cost: $19.99

Release Date: April 18, 2019

After serving as a console exclusive to the Xbox One for a year and a half, this instant classic is at last heading to the Nintendo Switch. This may seem like a simple game but thanks to its rock-hard difficulty and gorgeous handcrafted vintage art style, this proved to be a big hit on Microsoft’s system. Players can either go it alone or with a partner in frantic 2D shoot ‘em up action. The visuals may look like a loveable classic 1930s cartoon, yet don’t let that fool you. As previously stated, the gameplay is not for the faint at heart. Gamers will be punished while they jump, shoot, and certainty die in an attempt to beat the games many bosses.

Game: Final Fantasy X-X2 Remaster

Platform: Nintendo Switch Release

Rating: T for Teens

Cost: $49.99

Release Date: April 16, 2019

Speaking of the Nintendo Switch, the popular hybrid console is getting a whole host of ports and HD remasters, including many of the Final Fantasy games, center of which are Final Fantasy X-X2. These two beloved games take the player on a beautiful journey, pulling us in close to the variety of characters until we fall in love and care deeply about each of them. Being an old school turn-based role-playing game, the gameplay could be a little too slow for some. Still, for those who adore getting swept up in a great tale, these two games can’t come fast enough on April 16th.

These are just some of the games we have heading our way before the summer, stock up now before the drought begins.
