The Brooklyn Sports Club’s Virtual Gym

By Amanda Moses

Last month, many facilities were forced to close as part of a mandate by New York State Governor Cuomo to help stop the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC) closed on March 18th to help keep members of the community safe. The staff wanted to ensure that residents stay healthy, both physically and mentally during this time, so they developed a virtual gym using social media (Facebook and Instagram).

“This project started out as a way to stay connected to our members. We didn’t have enough time to let them know about the status of their memberships,” said Arnie Gonzalez, Executive Director of the BSC.

The BSC has a Facebook page to share fitness ideas, announce classes, or new equipment. After the closure, the BSC made sure to reach out to members through email and Facebook. “We wanted to let the members know that we would be suspending ALL payments for dues, and their memberships will be frozen until we open.  They didn’t have to do anything. We would take care of it all. It was our way of removing one less worry from their minds during this unimaginable time,” Gonzalez said.

Every day the BSC staff members are on Facebook Live and Instagram to provide free, fun exercises for everyone to take part in. There are Calypsocize lessons with Rodney Graves, Yoga and Meditation with Kevin Campbell, a Full Body workout with Deb Thomas, Aerobics and Planking with Alicia Rosenberg, and the staff uses the Zoom application for other classes, such as Zumba.

“We plan on doing more live classes, video uploads of nutritional tips, and fitness challenges. We want to stay engaged with our members and all their friends and family. Currently, we are working on a schedule of what to expect in the coming days,” said Gonzalez.

“This has been a great team effort with everyone involved. We would like the link to go out beyond our members of the physical club. When we reopen, we want the virtual gym to become one with the actual club as a collectively big family of fitness and fun,” Gonzalez said.
