On behalf of the staff of P.S. 346, I am happy to welcome all of our students and their families to what we know will be an exciting new school year! Student academic performance continues to thrive and as always, we are constantly seeking out new ways of ensuring that all of our students have the greatest opportunity for growth and success. During the summer we received hundreds of new volumes of books (fiction and non-fiction) that are both culturally relevant and geared toward each child’s reading level. Student performance on ELA and Math exams continue to improve as we design lessons that meet the needs of all our children from Pre-K through Grade 5.

Throughout the year we will be offering co-ed sports programs in lacrosse, basketball and baseball. In addition, last year we added a P.S. 346 Dance Step Team and we will continue to provide student academic assemblies, field trips and cultural celebrations.

Our first day of school is Wednesday, September 5, 2018. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with all our families to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from the home, school, and community. We know a strong partnership will make a great difference in every child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want all parents and guardians to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities.

We ask that parents/guardians guide and support their child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:

  • Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
  • Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
  • Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
  • Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of their school life
  • Informs you if they need additional support in any area or subject
  • Knows that you expect them to succeed in school and go on to college

This year our Open House is on Thursday, September 13th between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. This is a perfect time to meet the teachers and find out about our programs for the year ahead including the many Parent Workshops we will be providing. Gateway Intermediate School 364 Principal Nicole Fraser-Edmund

As we prepare to embark on the 2018-19 school year, we extend a heartfelt welcome to new and returning students to Gateway Intermediate School 364. The staff is excited, thrilled and looking forward to an amazing school year and we know it will be the best one yet! We are ready for the awesome task of preparing all students to be successful learners, critical thinkers and college & career ready scholars. 

For many students, the beginning of the school year is a time filled with excitement and anticipation as they prepare to reacquaint themselves with friends, develop new friendships, and enter the next grade of their education. This school year will be filled with many learning opportunities for our students, community service projects, the arts, recreation, college awareness programs and so much more.

Helen Keller said “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” At Gateway I.S. 364 we take great pride in establishing an environment that invites its valued stakeholders to be a part of the educational process so we welcome the attendance of parents, guardians, and community members at school events and encourage your participation by volunteering in our school. You are a valued member of our team!

Frederick Douglass Academy VIII Principal Chantal Grandchamps

Welcome all parents/guardians and scholars to the 2018-2019 school year. The staff and I have worked hard this summer to prepare for an awesome year. A new school year is an opportunity for a fresh start towards growth and excellence. Academic and social-emotional supports for the scholars remain our number one priority at the school. 

At Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) VIII, our scholars are problem solvers and critical thinkers who identify chal-lenges, gather information, generate potential solutions, refine ideas and test solutions. Our theme this school year is “We are going full STEAM ahead.” The year will be filled with opportunities to express your creativity, knowledge, and power as a scholar through science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. We are proud to announce that our sports program will continue this year. Go Tigers!
Communication is key in building a strong home-school connection. I hope to continue building strong partnerships this year with my “open door policy” and remember that your first point of contact should be your child’s teacher. There will be monthly “Sip and Chats” and weekly opportunities to visit your child’s classrooms on parent empowerment days. Ms. Balfour, our Parent Coordinator, will send out information about these opportunities through the monthly calendar /newsletter.

We will continue to use our school messaging system, Jupiter grades, and Liveschool to send key information about your child’s academic performance and attendance. It is im-portant that you provide the school with an updated phone number and email address. You will also receive notifications and invites to special events happening at the school through these systems. Our school website www.fdaviii.org will be updated in the upcoming weeks. Director of Starrett Early Learning Center Tammy Moore

Welcome to the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year! It is my excited pleasure to begin a new journey of educating the young scholars of The Starrett Early Learning Center (SELC) as their new program and education director. I salute its predecessor for creating and establishing this institute of early childhood for the Spring Creek Towers’ community.

My career as an educator spans across 25 years. As an experienced early childhood teacher dually certified in special and general education, I am passionate about collaborating with families in building and developing emotionally and cognitively strong resilient learners. There is a saying which states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I believe this wholeheartedly and because of it, the amazing work of ‘raising’ this generation is one I gladly share with the all of the leaders within our village. Our main focus is to prepare the students for kindergarten and beyond while having fun by providing a wonderful and joyful experience!
At SELC, our endeavor is to offer a high quality early childhood education within a productive, safe, and healthy learning environment. All students will have the opportunity to learn and grow with his/her peers in a variety of ways. Nurturing our students into independent self-regulated learners is a priority.
Our Early Childhood program spans the ages of 2.5 years to UPK. We employ a myriad of developmentally appropriate themes to help the students learn as they play. All learning is aligned to The New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core which includes the following domains: 

  • Approaches to Learning – How children become involved in learning and acquiring knowledge.
  • Physical Development and Health – Children’s physical health and ability to engage in daily activities.
  • Social and Emotional Development – The emotional competence and ability to form positive relationships that give meaning to children’s experiences in the home, school, and larger community.
  • Communication, Language, and Literacy – How children understand, create, and communicate meaning.
  • Cognition and Knowledge of the World – What children need to know and understand about their world and how they apply what they know. I am looking forward to creating a strong partnership with our families and the community as a whole. Family engagement and parent workshops will be an additional focus at SELC this school year. So stay tuned!
