What is Cryotherapy and What are the Benefits of Cryotherapy?

By Pamela Stern

Hearing the term Cryotherapy, the first thing that I thought of was actually crying and I was wondering what is the big deal about that. Then I heard the true meaning behind Cryotherapy which is that it derives from the Greek cryo meaning cold and therapy meaning cure. This treatment involves the use of freezing or near freezing temperatures. Cryotherapy might be a safe alternative treatment for many ailments such as; muscle pain, sprains, and swelling. There are a few different types of Cryotherapy; whole body Cryotherapy is where your entire body is in a chamber with your head sticking out of it, Cryofacials are where your face is sprayed with the cool air for a limited time, and localized cryo targets a specific area on your body where you are experiencing some pain.

I tried all three forms of the Cryotherapy so I can tell you what I experienced. First, I had the Cryofacial. For this I laid down on a bed that resembled a massage table. I closed my eyes and the associate sprayed this really cool air all over my face. She did this for six minutes. She asked me how I was feeling and I said that I felt great and it really did not seem to be that cold. When the six minutes were up then she asked if I would like two different types of cream on my face. I said, “Sure”! She rubbed these two types of cream on my face and my face felt great. It felt as though I had a regular facial.

Next up was the whole body Cryotherapy. I was nervous and anxious at the same time. I had read up a lot on this Cryotherapy and was ready to finally experience it.  Ok, so I go into the changing room and I was given socks and a robe. Now, I was ready to go! I went into the room where the Cryotherapy chamber is located. I had to step up into the Cryo Chamber. Once I was in the chamber I had to hand over my robe and the associate handed me gloves. Once the cryo session started, I thought alright, this isn’t so bad and then I started to really feel the cold. The associate talked to me during the whole three minutes that I was in there. It went by pretty quick. I could not believe how fast it was and now it’s over. Once my three minutes were up, the associate handed me the robe and I put it on and then I came out of the chamber. It went by so fast that I couldn’t believe it.

Some of the benefits of Cryotherapy are:

  • Reduces Pain & Inflammation
  • Quicker recovery time for Athletes
  • Boosts Metabolism
  • Repairs Tissue Damage
  • Prevents Osteoporosis
  • Increases Agility and Balance
  • Releases Adrenaline
  • Improves Blood Circulation
  • Increases Energy
  • Improves Depression & Anxiety
  • Burns 500-800 Calories per session
  • Reduces Stress
  • Helps Treat Migraines
  • Improves Sleep
  • Reduces Cellulite
  • Tightens Skin tone

So what did I think I think of the cryotherapy? I thought it was good, I left having a lot of energy and I would definitely do it again. I think for me to feel more of the benefits, I would need to have some more sessions. I can tell you that my sleep has improved since my cryotherapy sessions. My neck and lower back had some pain prior to my sessions and after my cryo sessions both my neck and my lower back pain have started to subside.  I definitely think that it is worth it, to try it and see for yourself how you feel.
